Week 4 DEVLOG

This week has been interesting to say the least.  When we were tasked to bring a sport to a board game my brain could not process how to play a sport like that, but as my team and I tossed around ideas, it slowly became easier to vision and see where the rules needed to come into play to make the game more fun.

At 9:14 in the Bennet Foddy video, he talks about "raising the stakes" by introducing drama to the mix. With our competitive tag game we called "Dont Touch Me" we added nerfs to players to make the game feel costlier. From adding a subtract 1 and 2 for each roll the infected player takes, this causes them to strategize even more. Then when they catch up to an uninfected player the uninfected must roll an even number to get evade the player. This added drama adds a factor of keeping players on edge, wondering how the game is going to go.

At 15:49, Foddy talks about the need for danger of penalty in games with his example of LA Noire, that if there is no danger or penalty then the player doesnt want to try or play anymore. When my group was designing the game space we decided to use structures to limit the free reign a player can do, to make them strategize and actually think. Then after we got an other group to try out the game, my teammates were saying they want to add walls in the game. I am not sure how this will work but I take it they tried a round and the fun of the game jumped and the players were actually enjoying the game more and trying to think and try harder.

The game I researched was Basse, a game out of Norway. I liked it because the rules were pretty simple and easy to understand. Basically you and other players kick around this ball made of deflated bicycle tires that cant bounce and kick them around to other players, who are all standing in a drawn circle around them. The goal is to strike out another player and trying not to let the ball land in your circle. That is it! Short and sweet and my type of game!
